Geto

Gotta Catch 'em All

Ahhh a true villain. Geto is SICK, I've said it before and I'll say it again, any character that has any Buddhism or Hinduism references to them is automatically a good character to me (blame Akuma and his prayer beads). Out of the new generation of anime and manga, he is one of the best villains. Gege knows how to write cool characters, I swear. I also love how he is still an important part of the overall plot of Jujutsu Kaisen, spanning from the prequel to the main story currently. His cursed technique ties in with his backstory, making his character design top tier. Bro turned evil, declared war and donned the Buddhist priest garms. On top of that, one of the major villains in the series takes over his dead body because of how strong Geto was, knowing full well how broken his abilities are.

Personality

Gojo and Geto were bros back in the day

As one of the strongest characters in the series, Geto used to be a humble guy. He was the polar opposite to Gojo (personality wise). The manga really emphasised how he believed the strong should protect the weak. Considering his abilities its surprising how optimistic he was when it came to Jujutsu Sorcery since his main ability caused mental strain every time he uses it.

Now onto why he turned into an opp. The main ideology Geto followed was “Jujutsu sorcerers must protect non-sorcerers because non sorcerers are weak”. So Geto and Gojo went through the trenches and the STRUGGLE in protecting humans from curses. Geto’s perspective changed once someone he cared about was killed for money by a non-sorcerer (Toji is the sickest character, imma do a hit piece on him). Then the realisation hits him, “why am I protecting those who discriminate against sorcerers? Especially when Jujutsu sorcerers are superior in every way”.

Now my boy is on the “Non-sorcerers are inferior in every way and must be exterminated. This is for the betterment of the human race” (This ideology is very similar to Kenjaku’s beliefs, imma do a hit piece on him tooo). This leads to Geto heavily discriminating against humans who do not know Jujutsu sorcery, always referring to them as “monkeys” and treating them like trash. The way he interacts with the main cast in the movie is sick because he truly doesn’t want to kill them (because they are sorcerers) and singles out Maki by calling her a monkey because she does not know any sorcery. He’s basically racist towards anyone who isn’t a jujutsu sorcerer.

Abilities

His mental was finished

Now on to why Geto is broken. This mans cursed technique is “Curse manipulation”. He can absorb curses and summon them to fight for him. He’s basically a pokemon trainer in this series, trying to catch the strongest curse. There’s a catch to this though. He catches a curse by first turning them into a black sphere, then he has to physically ingest it before he can summon said curse.

Now onto the reason why this ability played an important role in him turning out the way he did. Geto describes ingesting these curses like swallowing a dirty rag that is covered in vomit. This man has thousands of curses in his arsenal. So he has gone through this process thousands of times, all in the name of protecting humans. Digesting curses over and over affected his mental health too, so realising all of this was thrown back in his face and everything he endured was for nothing pushed him over the edge.

Maximum Uzumaki

Other characters state the reason why Geto is so dangerous towards humans if he was to defect is because he can easily change the tide of battle between Sorcerers and Curses. Being able to summon a large amount of curses in one area at any time is a problem. These curses also have techniques of their own so fighting Geto is not easy. There’s more though, he knows a maximum technique. Maximum techniques and Domain expansions are considered to be peak Jujutsu techniques, so if a sorcerer knows any of these types of techniques, you know they’re serious. Geto has a maximum technique known as “Maximum Uzumaki”, where he combines all the curses he’s absorbed into one curse and sends it out as an attack.

We’re not done yet, I wasn’t joking when I said the guy is broken. Remember how I mentioned someone else possessed his corpse? Later on in the series that person mentions how Geto did not know the full potential of his abilities. He’s able to capture and use curses that have a domain expansion. Yes, the technique that is peak Jujutsu sorcery. He also wasn’t aware that there was a second part to his maximum technique: he can absorb a curse, then exorcise it, stealing the curse’s technique and being able to use it himself. Think of it as Ash Ketchum killing any of his pokemon and being able to use their moves himself.

In Jujutsu Kaisen, sorcerers who typically fight by summoning stuff are generally not on the front lines and are considered vulnerable without them. However Geto and Megumi surprise their opponents by being comfortable throwing out hands and using close combat weapons.

Had Yuta and Rika on ropes

Smoke

8/10, what happened to my man was unfortunate but he had to get taken out, there was no changing him. It was stated that Geto would’ve beat Yuta if he didn’t split up his curses. Also Geto wouldn’t kill any Jujutsu Sorcerer unless he has a grand plan they’re stopping him from achieving, he praised Yuta and the gang for how well they’re fighting with cursed energy. If you’re not a sorcerer you’re getting smoked through and through.
